Mon. 25 [25 April 1898] Got up before 6 and found ourselves in
Nagasaki harbour. We went off directly after breakfast, wandered
round the town and up into temples and graveyards on the hillside,
then to the Horse Temple (Suwo) which is not much in itself but the
view lovely and the gardens charming. Wisteria all out and white
briars and monthly roses. In the streets they were selling irises and
spring chrysanthemums. Took kuromas and drove over the hill and
down to Mogu. Wisteria festooning all the trees on the hillsides. Took
a sampan and rowed across to a temple on a rock planted with pines
on the other side of the bay. Delicious view of rock and water and
distant hills. Quite tolerable European lunch at the tea house and so
home. Hot sun in morning, cold and grey after lunch. Country all
green. Walked about Nagasaki; it doesn't look much like Japan,
regular sailor port, notices all up in Russian. Heard our last samisen
tinkling in a house behind shoji. Back to the Belgic at 4, off at 5.
Lovely bay and islands. Passed the Doric coming in. Talked to a
nice Englishman before dinner, Mr Smith.
