Sat. 23 [23 April 1898] Fine but grey. Went by an 11 o'clock train to Maiku which we reached about 12. Took Kuromas and went out to a grove of twisted pine trees by the beach, where we stopped and had lunch at a tea house - omelet, made alas! with sugar, fish boiled and floating in water and tori nabe which was made before us on a hibatche [sic]. With rice and tea this made a good meal. Kuromaed back, M. [Maurice] and Mandarin took the train at Shioya, Mr de R. [de Rutzen] and I kuromaed the whole way (exquisite with pines and azaleas up to Souma) getting in at 3.30. Very long dull hours till dinner. Frightfully depressed and miserable. Left on the hotel launch at 9. Kobe harbour looked like a town there were so many lights. Belgic seems a good boat, large and comfy. But I have a companion in my cabin, Miss Lee, large and angular missionary, very amenable and pleasant however. [Card with Japanese characters and drawing of hills, sea and boats attached to page].
