Wed 9 [9 March 1898] Mr M [Mainwaring] and Mr de R [de Rutzen]
appeared at 10. We went out to Shiba which we saw in delicious sun -
a glory of red and gold and green. 2nd Shogun best of all. In a
priest's house exquisite flower arrangements. The tomb is a
wonderful lacquer one with a plum tree in full flower by the door, red
camellias all round. Passed over the hill, down by a Fox[?] temple.
Then to the Kwankoba where we shopped. Back to lunch and set[?]
.... to Kameido the wisteria place. On to a plum garden in full flower
where we had tea. Then to a Yashiki garden all in miniature with red
and white plums flowering. Then to the curio street where we bought
kimonos at Domei's and so home. After dinner I went with the
Wilcoxes to the Yoshiwara. All the girls sitting behind bars
gorgeously dressed. Very cold. Tommy took me.
