Mon 28 [28 February 1898] Colder, fur cloak. Pessimist rather
miserable having had fever all night. Taught me Japanese. After
lunch grand trial of Mr Adam for libel; charge brought by Mr Goodrich,
Dr Wilcox judge, Mr de R. [de Rutzen] clerk, Mr Mainwaring counsel
for the defence, the Admiral marshall, M [Maurice] and I and others
witnesses. Tea, talked to the Pessimist; a head wind and good deal
of sea. Played chess with the Admiral and Mr Bussel; the talked
Pessimist [sic] and went to bed. Rough night. A seagull flew on
board.
