Mon. 10. [10 January 1898] Very hot. I made love to the Chief Officer,
Mr Dicks, and got out my box from the hold and white clothes which
were a great comfort. Read Renan and played two rounds of golf
before lunch, one with Mr L. against Mr N. [Northcote] and M [Maurice]
and one with Mr Lamont against Sir W. [Smith] and Mr N. After lunch
read, played more golf, photographed golf groups, had a golf tea and
afterwards played off my last piquet tie with Mr Hoffmann and won it.
Beautiful sunset. The temp. was 90? in some of the cabins today. At
desert [sic] Sir W. in a very neat speech thanked the Captain for his
care of us and presented him with an address signed by all the
passengers. We drank the health of him and the officers in bad
champagne and the Captain returned most elegant thanks. After
dinner sat and talked with Mr Lamont on the hurricane deck, then we
had a dance. It was furiously hot. Danced all the squares with Sir W.
Sat out one with Mr Lamont and waltzed with M and the 4th officer who
took off as many collars as the tramp cyclist. Supper all together with
the Captain. Then M and I , Sir W. and Mr N. sat on deck till 12.
Wonderful moon and the air like a caress it was so soft and
heavenly.
