Tues. 28. [28 April 1896] Out to Alinari's, French's (where we met Lady
Claud Hamilton, dashing lady!) and Cook's. Then to the Pitti. I should
like to carry off the Angelo Doni, the Concert and the 3 Ages of Man.
The Titian Duke of Norfolk magnificent, the Rafael Donna Velata very
beautiful - she is so like the Sistine Madonna - the Rafael Exekiel the
Andrea Dispute over the Trinity and the Perugino head of Magdalen
(the counterpart of the portrait in the Uffizi) are all quite delightful. I still
can't away with all the big Andrea pictures. Walked through the
passage to the Uffizi and so home to lunch. In the afternoon went to
Santa Croce, it's awfully interesting to see Giotto here on top of Assisi
and Padua [Padova]. I was also again much struck by the 2
Giottino's and how good Taddeo Gaddi can be, a good scholar, not
original. Went into the charming cloisters of the Pazzi chapel where a
very old gardener was cutting roses, and to see the Giotto Cenabola
in the Refectory. Then tea at Giacosa's after which shopped, went to
Or San Michele - it is most curious to see Orcagna cutting his stone
pictures just as he and his contemporaries painted - or rather I
suppose, the other way round; then to the Badia where we looked at
the dear Filippino and the Mino tombs, bless him! Also a charming
Virgin and Saints by Rossellino, just not Mino. Dined at Doney's. I
packed.
