Tues 8. [8 August 1899] Got to the Hook [Hoek van Holland] at 6 after
a very good night. Very comfortably into our train, Thorn[?] joined us.
Breakfast on the train. Mr Corbet also there travelling with the Bealys.
A long wait of 3/4 of an hour at Kˆln [(Cologne)]. Hugo and I visited
the Dom and brought a Figaro with the full account of the first day of
the Dreyfus trial. Lunched with our family after Kˆln, changed at Maintz
[Mainz]. It rained unfortunately so that the Rhine journey was spoilt.
Got to Frankfurt [Frankfurt am Main] at 4.20 and found Mr Chirol on the
platform having missed his connection. Our family went on to
Homburg and we to the Frankfurter Hof. Mr C and I went out to shop
chocolate and look at the Rˆmer. Dined early and out to hear
Fidelio, very well given. Met Claud Phillips in the lift! [Cast list of
Fidelio attached to page.]
