Wed 3. [3 May 1893] Left Weimar at 11 and went to Eisenach where
we lunched and walked to the Wartburg. Lovely Romanesque castle
with outlying buildings and walls red roofed and inlaid with beams.
Inside the Minnesinger[?] room and others all decorated with
childishly bad frescoes; Luther's room too with his writing table bed
and stove and a lovely view out of the narrow windows. Walked
through pine and beech woods through the Schlucht to the Hohe
Sonne. It rained a good deal but left off about 5 and we walked home
through the forest in the delicious damp evening all smelling of pine
needles.
