Sun. Oct. 12. [12 October 1919] 'Izz ud Din came for a minute early; then 'Abdul Rahman Shahbander for his letter; then Faiz al Ghusain who is practising as an advocate here. While he was with me discussing the appointment of Gouraud - he was very moderate in his views - came in Ja'far Pasha and joined the talk with lamentations over the French Wusa'iyah. Said he would go to the 'Iraq and turn to cultivating, he would concern himself no longer with politics. Muhammad Bassam brought Waja' al Ayubi cousin of Atta al Ayubi, to see me. Next came 'Abdullah Dulaimi, a Col. in the Arab army who wants to go for a visit to Mosul [Mawsil, Al] to see his family. He is a great friend of Zaid's, but Faisal does not like him and thinks he has a bad influence over Zaid. Told him to meet me in Aleppo [Halab] and I would see what I could do for him. Then Mustafa Pasha al 'Adil, father of Naziq and while he was there 'Izz ud Din arrived to take me out to lunch at his house. \n\nA long and rather tiresome party, the only interest of which was that 'Izz ud Din's sister appeared unveiled before men not her relations for the first time and kept having relapses of shyness in which she recovered her face. Naziq was there, Hamdi Beg and another man. \n\nAt 4 walked down to the Malek al Dhahir where there was a party in my honour in the madrasat of the Malik al 'Adil which they are turning into a museum. 'Ali Ridha Rikabi and some 30 or more notables were there including Muhammad and Ahmad Kurd 'Ali, old Tahir al Jazairi who has recently published in the Muqattam an open letter of Arab affairs addressed to me, Muhammad al Bassam, Mustafa al 'Adil, and others of note. After tea Muhammad Kurd 'Ali, 'Izz ud Din and the Protestant pastor (an Arab) pronounced discourses in my praise with a fatal fluency. Col. Newcombe was there and took me home to the hotel. There I found {Capt.} Major Wadman and settled my journey with him. After dinner I saw Major Mocatta, Captain Berry and another just over from Mesopotamia and on their way home.
