Sat. 13. [13 May 1905] Spent the whole day planning churches and monasteries and did not finish. Rode up into a neighbouring point and found that the Kara Dagh [Kara Dag] is a great volcano, the crater being a .... pasture[?] ground[?]. We have excellent water from a spring but there is very little water in the mt. On top of the hill there was a tiny wood with snowdrops in it - just over - and the crown was fortified with well laid courses of stones. Muhammad said all the hill tops were thus fortified. In the evening I had not finished my work and resolved to stay on. Windy.
