Fri. 30 [30 January 1903] Breakfast at 8.30 after which we went with Mr
Cordah and Mr Brown to see the school. Saw the boys learning
English, arithmetic and Euclid - wonderfully well, but when the younger
boys read English it was almost impossible to understand. I
understood their Urdu better. The Euclid master is a great Arabic
scholar. Mr Cordah is trying to teach the boys English by Berlitz plans
and they hope to get a man out for it, the govt. bearing half the
expense. At 10 Mr M. [Morison] came out of his class and we left.
Just caught our train. Muni decamped - we found out at Tundla, where
we lunched, that he wasn't there. Got to Agra at 3 and determined to
stay. Met Lord Killanin and Willie Peel. Went to the Taj where we met
the Russells. A drop of rain then a lovely cloudy sunset. The Taj
looked beautiful. It's best by not too strong light. Merry dinner with the
Russells. New moon. All the roses out in the Taj garden.
