Sun 21. [21 December 1902] Up at 7, very dark and cold, out at 7.30 in
the early sun and climbed the hill behind the hotel. Got onto the top in
half an hour and onto the topmost top half an hour after. Lovely views
of Lake Plain and temples. Tried a new way down and got caught in
jungles full of cactus and thorns, the result being that I came down like
a porcupine, a perfect mass of prickles. In soon after 10. After
breakfast photographed by the lake and at 12 walked down to the
tonga station with the Welbys and the 2 Americans. No tongas - H.
[Hugo] and I went down in rickshaws sending Muhammad with the
luggage in an ekka. Got down at 3.30 just in time to snatch lunch
before the train came. Carriage to ourselves, nasty[?] dinner on the
train and so to bed.
