Sat. March 1. [1 March 1902] Printed and walked out with Evelyn to
the tepe and the manganese pit and on to a field where they were
ploughing with buffaloes and to the top of a hill where Mr VL [Van
Lennep] had opened a Byzantine tumulus and some archaic dittos
and found various pots and rings. Prof. Ramsay had also assisted.
In to lunch - very hot day. At 3 Nellie, Irma and Willie came with M.
Bari. Played croquet till tea after which we walked up to the tumulus.
Perfectly cloudless evening, Colophon and Pilar[?] Tepe exquisite
and the river and the plains. Played Bridge after dinner.
