Sat 3. [3 March 1900] Heavenly, hot and sunny. After lunch Ferideh
and I rode, she on Issachar, up to Mar Elias where we took a
charming little path down towards Bait Jala [Beit Jala]. The whole
place full of flowers - lots of irises. We came back by Bait Safafa [Beit
Safafa] and got in at 7. As I came home after dinner I met a Jewish
funeral. They only keep the bodies one hour in the house after death,
if they die on the Sabbath, they have to bury them directly the Sabbath
is over. They were going with lanterns to the Valley of Jehoshaphat,
chanting prayers.
