Sun. 7. [7 May 1899] Off by boat at 10 to Brusa [Bursa]. Very
crowded. The English consul and some dull looking women and the
Berkeleys man, Mr Clive. Mr Swingle [Swaigh[?]] an American, 2
friendly Germans, one of whom with a beard had been of the Dˆrpfeld
party, and a foursome M. and Mme Alfred ChayÈs of Odessa and his
sister Mme de Boschan and her husband of Vienna [Wien]. With all
of whom we made great friends. Lovely day. At lunch talked to Mr
Clive who had been to Japan, and I talked of Japan. A young
Bismarck, rather good looking, on board, but I came to no speech
with him. Reached Mondania [Mudanya] at 4 and drove to Brusa, the
4some going by train. Exquisitely green - olives, corn and poppies,
mulberries; rollas and storks and many kinds of birds. Stopped half
way under oak trees and had sherbet and coffee. Olympus [Ulu
Daglari] splendid, snow covered. Reached Brusa at 6, Hotel
Anatolie, Mme Brodt a delightful woman and most comfortable.
Roses in the garden, deliciously hot. We walked up the town, under
the Roman gate and were conducted home by a gamin. Sat
opposite the 2 Germans at dinner and after talked to the foursome.
