Sat 20. [20 May 1899] Left at 10, very hot, but it clouded over and even rained a little. Florence and Mr Chirol met me at the station where I arrived at 1. Uncle Frank in great form. After lunch he and Domnul went out to play golf. F. had a tennis party and Fls von Hintenburg and Spitzenberg, Lori Harach [i.e. Harrach], Countess Hohenau[?], Mr Ewing, Knesebech, Count Thurm and his wife (Austrians) Herr Richter, and some other men among them a young Lerchenfeldt. A heavy thunderstorm came on and we had to have tea in the summer house and then come home. Dinner party. Countess Harrach and Lori, Lady Gough a good dull woman, Mr Seymour, Mr Gaisford, Mr Fergusson. Sat between the two attachÈs. Mr Gaisford is a dear, I was glad to see him again. After dinner Mr Fergusson sang quite beautifully, Schumann, Caro mio ben', and lots more. Most successful evening. Mr Gaisford, Domnul, F, Uncle F and I retired into the study afterwards and talked it over.
