Tues. 25. [25 April 1899] And got up about 7. Cloudy day with gleams
of sun. The boat full of sheep being taken to Athens [Athinai] for
Pascal lambs - next Sunday is the Greek Easter. Rather good
breakfast with delicious butter like whipped cream, but no milk
because the Greeks are fasting. Reached Itea at 9, mounted ponies
and rode off through a plain covered with olive woods. Saw a
caravan of camels, the remains of the Turkish occupation. Up a
steep hill for about an hour, past Crissa and got to Castri (Delphi) at
11.30. All the Dˆrpfeld party here. Joined them just as they were
coming home to lunch and walked with Mrs D. Then went out and
looked at the ruins and back at 1 to lunch - our lodging much taken up
by the Grand Duke, his companion Schiff, and the Bourriennes[?].
After lunch went to the museum where we heard M. Perdrizet lecture
and then on with the party to the Castalian fountain and the
gymnasium. Said goodbye to Dˆrpfeld who left at 4.30. At 5 got back
to our house where we found the 3 French boys having tea, Perdrizet,
Cahen and Mendel. Amusing talk about the Praxiteles. Invited them
all the [sic] dinner, we have turned them out of their lodging. Lovely
evening. Magnificent view down the valley and the [sic] across the
olive plain to the sea. Moon rising full behind a shoulder of the hill.
Most entertaining dinner. They left at 10 and we went to bed very
sleepy.
