Fri 6. [6 May 1898] The other two arrived from Canton [Guangzhou] went out in a sampan to see the Salazie which did not look inviting. Stayed in till 5 when we went to see some Polo. Dined with Mr Whitehead, Girauds, Mr and Mrs Grey, Miss Black an extremely strangely behaved old young lady, daughter of the General in chief, Captain and Mrs Long who thought great things of themselves, Captain L...... sat on the other side of me and another dire[?] couple. All the young women called Mr Giraud Albert! Played Battle after dinner. Very hot night.
