Sat 16 [16 April 1898] Off at 8.30. Cloudy, we had a little rain which laid the dust and then passed off. Down the valley passed Nabari, big place, rested at a tea house by a stream - woman dying in one house lying on futons. Lovely valley, past a great cryptomeria grove with a shrine in it, up and up into the hill tops. Then down to [space left blank] where we lunched, very nice tea house with a pretty garden and a pond out of which a naked gentleman caught us carp for lunch. Clouds blew away. Road very bad and stony, Mr de R [de Rutzen] and I walked most of the way. Lots of pilgrims. From the last resting place I walked on my kuroma following. At top of hill exquisite view down, opening out into Nara valley. A wooded hill composing[?] in the foreground and all the valley covered with mustard. Turned a corner and saw Hase across a stream, hillside with temple and all white and pink with cherries. Chaya on the stream, delicious balconies. Went up to the Kwannon temple, exquisite low sun, long roofed staircase cherries everywhere and a fine pine. View perfect, hills clothed with cryptomeria. Saw a Jizo shrine pointed out to me by a friendly priest. Others came up and we went in to see the gigantic Kwannon. Then Mr de R and I to a priests' house down by Kano Motsonubo and I alone by to a Shinto temple, up a long flight of stairs under cryp. quite deserted, well, spirit shrine and long row of low building opposite. The Jap nightingale was singing and a few cherries hung out of the dark woods above. Dinner and bed. My watch and camera stolen in the night by a thief. I saw a dark figure in the balcony, doubtless he.
