Thurs 14 [14 April 1898] Bath at the risk of all decency! Breakfast 8.
Off at 9 in kuromas to Futami, exquisite day, mustard smelling
delicious. The rocks and coast too lovely straw ropes and goheis by
the sea. On to Toba along an indented coast, through woods. Up a
hill from which we had a perfect view from a cherry garden across
broken coast and islands and sea. A party of gaily dressed geisha.
Back to the other temple through woods skirting Asuna yana, very
bad road and very hot. Wild violets and a blue flower like a pale
gentian. Reached Naiku San at 1.45 ordered tiffin and went to temple.
People with nets standing under bridge catching rin. Exquisite cherry
garden. Temple better that Geku San, magnificent trees. Sacred
hens and pony. Jap lunch in room overlooking river, omelet, boiled
fish hot and cold rice and tea. Back to Yamada, stopping to throw rin
at 3 little dancing girls on way. Street lined with rin throwing games of
chance. Packed up, caught train in Robben which we reached about
5. Piggy tea house, but Koza gave us excellent dinner and we went to
bed and slept sound.
