Tues. 29. [29 March 1898] M [Maurice]'s birthday, delicious sunny
warm day. Photographed with Mandarin San and saw temples in
sunshine. At 12 went up to Toyama, riding to the foot and walking up;
there we tiffined; exquisite view, Nantenzai on one side and the long
valley on the other with the straggling town, a long long avenue of
cryptomerias and far away the plains. Shrine and stone gods at the
top. Then a mad ride over brown slopes, lovely views of the hills
everywhere. Back and down Nikko street and so in at 4.35. The
house which they are moving down the road had stuck in a hollow!
[Piece of unlabelled plant attached to page. Also card for Komeya
Hotel, Chuzenji, Nikko on which is handwritten "Komeya begs to
inform to all his customers he built one house for hotel named Chuguji
hotel."]
