Mon 28 [28 March 1898] Grey, but off to Chuzenji. Clouds lifted from
Nantenzai and left the trees all frost covered. Tea at the chaya, an
hour's ride brought us to a level wood deep in snow. Got off to see a
waterfall gushing out of the rock. About a mile on came to the lake
where we tiffined in a tea house overlooking the lake and
supplemented our meal with excellent fried lake trout. Saw the temple
- it's a Kobo Daishi place; Torii opening onto the lake. Snow clad hills
all round. Rode quickly home; in at 4. Walked down to the town with
Mandarin San and bought a pipe to give M [Maurice]. Early to bed.
