Sat 26 [26 March 1898] Grey and very cold. Went all over the
temples, exquisitely lovely, buried in tall trees. Lots of snow. Saw a
woman dance a sacred dance, colour and detail divine. M. [Maurice]
not very fit. After lunch Mr M [Mainwaring], Mr de R. [de Rutzen] and I
rode up the Chuzenji road, very rough riding, an avalanche fell about
20 yards ahead of us. Frozen snow and ice. Wonderful view of two
waterfalls. Up to a chaya where we had tea and cakes and made
friends with a charming family, then swiftly home. In at 5.30. Arai and
all the Neisans prostrate themselves when we go in and out.
