Fri. 11 [11 February 1898] Foggy so that we cd not go to Mount
Tamelpeis as we had planned. Mr Tevis came in to see us at
breakfast time. Went to our photographer's and got our films. He
advised us to go to the Presidio which we did, taking Mr Huschard
with us. We went in cars passing many "sociable homes". When we
got out to the reservation we found it quite country, many trees,
several beautiful sorts of yews, and two kinds of mimosa flowering
like mad. Had quite a long walk up to the fort, alas we could see
nothing it was so foggy. In to lunch after which went to get my coins, I
shopped and at 5 we went up to Mr Tevis's house. Met him waiting for
a car going up. Saw Mrs Tevis and a little granddaughter, Florence
Breckenridge, very pretty, and the funny bourgeois house built 40
years ago and many photographs of daughters and granddaughters.
Dined at the University Club with Mr Hugh Tevis, extremely merry -
superlatively good dinner - Californian oysters, soup fish canvas
backed duck and ice in white of egg. Delicious ripe olives. Came
away with an enormous bunch of Californian violets of enormous size.
We went to the Orpheum a sort of music hall where we stayed till
10.30 and then back to our hotel for cold drinks. Packed before I went
to bed.
