Thurs 10. [10 February 1898] Breakfasted at 10. Shopped. Went by
car to Cliff House but unfortunately the mist came down and we saw
little. Cd just see the seals and hear them barking on the rock. Went
to see the enormous Sutro Baths and then by various cars to the old
Spanish Mission. As we got into the town again the fog cleared away;
the mission church lies at the foot of two little round hills, partly
wooded, partly built over. Suborned the sacristan whom we found in
the school hard by and got in. Long and narrow and dark, adobe and
wood, built by the Indian converts whose graves marked by little
wooden crosses lie along the wall in the cemetary [sic] outside. The
altar screen of carved and gilded wood made by the Fathers.
Walked into the cemetary, full of Irish graves, not used any more.
This was the beginning of it all. When we got back to the Inn we found
that Mr Tevis had been twice to see us and was there then with his
son Hugh. A dear old man. We made many plans with them. Went to
the Baldwin theatre with the Moores to see the Girl from Paris which
was the Gay Parisienne. Rather funny. Came back to supper at the
hotel. To bed but not to sleep.
