Fri. 28 [28 January 1898] Reached San JosÈ de Guatemala early in
the morning. Got up at 6.30. Lovely background of volcanos [sic]
standing in a line - all extinct - with the hills running up between them
towards the high lands of Guatemala City. The Hawleys left; their
brothers came to fetch them. The priest also left. Read Arabic while
they fished for sharks - unsuccessfully though we hooked several.
After lunch read Renan; tea party. Talked to the Moores after dinner
and played patiences with Miss Pattinson. Off that night.
Tremendous surf.
