Sat 22 [22 January 1898] Got to Punt Arenas [Puntarenas] in Costa
Rica about midday and lay outside till night. Very beautiful deep bay,
great wooded mountains all round. Stood in the bows with M
[Maurice] and Miss Hawley and Mr Strang and took several
photographs. Pretty hot all the afternoon. Read Prescott. M rather
bad in the evening. Sat outside my cabin reading; Mr Strang came
and talked to me. The Purser is a familiar beast. I hate him. The
doctor and the engineer very pleasant. Coffee with Mrs and Miss
Pattinson. Got a breeze when we started, nice and cool.
