Sun 16. [16 January 1898] Off at 10 after a tremendous excitement
about our washing which was late. It did not come till after we had left
the quay, but the energetic Mr Murdoch threw a rope over, the Captain
saw our distress from the bridge and stopped the ship and we hauled
it in safe and dry. Captain Wyngate the Co.'s superintendent,
breakfasted with us. It was very nice getting to sea again and having
the ship washed down. It was covered with coal dust. Before we had
got 2 hours out we got into the steamy muggy atmosphere of the
Equatorial Current and into rough water. Impossible to keep awake. I
slept most of the afternoon, and went to bed at 8.
