Jan 1. Saturday. [1 January 1898] Still rough but I weighed in for
breakfast and sat on deck afterwards talking to the Captain, Cop [i.e.
Copp] is his name, and a man we call the Taper [Mr Hoffmann] who
travels in stuffs I think. He told me queer stories of the digging up of
Inca tombs and the finding them clothed in stuffs very like nun's
veiling! After lunch M [Maurice] and I talked to Sir W. Smith who is
going out to be a judge in Demarara and has been for 15 years a
judge in Cyprus which he is very sorry to leave. He knows Mr Hogarth
and Mr Browne and all about Babis and is quite pleasant and
interesting. I played piquet with M before dinner and was ill but dined
all the same. Mr Northcote also reappeared.
