Thurs. 30 [30 December 1897] Good breakfast still at anchor. Went
on deck, wind fell sun came out. Watched the coast of England and
the Isle of Wight. Talked to a globe trotting lady in green, Miss
Gearon, who has been everywhere and knows everything, an old
buffer called Mauresco head of a bank in Jamaica - his wife also is on
board - a dull family called Lamont, mother son and daughter the son
has an estate in Trinidad. We weighed in for lunch. I then went on
deck and talked to the Captain whose name is Cod [i.e. Copp]. Came
down slept and read till 6 when I was ill. Very wild night but slept
through most of it.
