Thurs. 5. [5 August 1897] Off at 7 with Papa. Walked up the long path
to the glacier in company with Edouard Pic and his son LÈon who
were going up to find gold and diamonds on the Meige! We parted at
the glacier and went up a long stony valley, finally clambered up the
arrete [sic] and so on to the rocky peak of the Peyron d'Amont - a
hard climb. Bouffe, the poodle, who was with us sat at the bottom and
cried. Lost our way coming down and had to go a long way along
under the arrete to the top of a nÈvÈ where we lunched. Then down to
the Refuge standing over a lovely litle lake into which the nÈvÈs and
streams dropped precipitously. Madame Emile Pic fed us at the
Refuge on biscuits and lemonade and showed us the way down. We
met Mr Hicks halfway down and sat talking to him a little. In by 3.30 or
4. Talked to Mathon the guide.
