Tues. 7. [7 April 1896] Much better. Went to the Frari where we met
Madame Wiel and Mr Zangwill - horrid little man! Looked at the great
Titian, a very noble picture and the wonderful Bellini. Mr Zangwill
arrived without having breakfasted and Madame Wiel distinguished
herself by offering him ham! He has no manners, shuffles about and
attracts one's attention by jogging one's elbow or tapping one on the
shoulder with his stick! My Father and I then went to the Carmini where
we saw a perfectly charming Lotto, Virgin and Child (Nativity) with a
marvellous landscape of sea behind. Then to the Mater D. where we
saw a very nice Catena, St somebody with little angels with
millstones. Home to lunch. Lesson afterwards out to bargain and led
away to Salviati's to see glass blowing. Home to tea. After dinner Mr
Hogarth came in and talked very interestingly.
