Fri. 11. [11 August 1899] Got up and walked round the town with the others. Delicious misty morning. Looked into all the churches and greeted Vischer, Kraft and Veit Stoss. Left at 10.30 by a special and got to Bayreuth at 12. Luitpold Platz 2, most comfortable. Very scrappy lunch next door, dined and drove up to the theatre and brilliant sunshine. Hugo and I sat together, behind us Leo Schuster, Claud Phillips, the Wortleys and a Leeds quondam curate. Ternina was quite magnificent, the Parsifal very sticky Gurnemanz excellent. The first act extraordinarily fine, wonderfully impressive. The second I didn't much care for. We dined after it very comfortably at the nearest Restaurant. The opera finished about 10. On the whole I liked the 3rd act best; the Char Freiteg music is so quite splendid. Walked home and sat talking for a little before bed. [Cast list for Parsifal attached to page.]
