Fri. 18. [18 August 1899] A day off. Cold and stormy. We walked up
to the Sieges Thurn and then through the woods to the B¸rgerreuth,
where we lunched, Hugo joining us there. It began to rain and we ran
home inviting Tovey and Miss Weisse to tea on the way. They came
at 4.30. After tea Tovey played some Meistersinger. Dined in full
dress at Riebenstahl and went on to Wahnfried about 9. Most
interesting. Knesebech introduced us to Frau Cosima, a most
imposing old woman. The rooms full of books and pictures of
Wagners, Schopenhauer, and musicians. Talked to Fred Benson Mr
Lindsay and Mr Dugdale. Then to all the Harrach group. Very good
music, a Beethoven quartet, a Mozart trio and some Liszt songs sung
magnificently by Burgstaller. His Ex carried on with Ternina and
enjoyed himself very much. We came away at 11.
