Thurs. 17 [17 August 1899] Florence and I walked out and met the
Grand Duke who took us up to Wahnfried and introduced us to Frau
Thode who was walking in the garden. We drove out to the Fantaisie
to lunch. The Gˆtterd‰mmerung superb. Every scene was excellent.
Schumann Heink was glorious as Waltraute, Schmedes very fine in
the last act, so was Gulbransen. The Rhine, Erda and Gibichung
music quite lovely and the scenery exquisite. Had tea after the 1st
act, walked about after the 2nd and dined at the end of all things. The
Whole Wagner family came in, Siegfried, Frau Cosima, Wolkensteins
etc and were greeted with great applause. Gulbransen had an
ovation. The M. Bells and Lady Conway supped with us, everyone
was there. [Cast list for Gˆtterd‰mmerung attached to page.]
