Friday 9. [9 August 1895] Fine day. Hugo, Elsa Papa and I started at
10 for the Frau H¸tt. Fearful long pull up to the Senn H¸tte where the
children had milk while I lay on a most comfortable roof where I woke
little boy Blue who was lying there too fast asleep. L'Amore climbed
up the ladder and was fearfully pleased with himself. The Sch‰fer
was very friendly - I fancy he was drunk. We then went on to the
waterfall where we arrived about 1 and lunched on semels, meat,
sausage, cheese and chocolate. Papa made some excellent
chocolate to drink in a little saucepan and we poured some of the
Senn H¸tte milk into it and drank it with relish. L'Amore had a large
lunch. We then walked on up a very long and tedious grass slope
which ended at the foot of the rocks. Then the path led along the
base of the cliffs, over lumpy ground with occasional slopes of stones
to the top of the saddle. Water was flowing nearly up to the top. When
one arrived on the saddle a very wonderful view burst upon one quite
suddenly, framed by the great rocks at the bottom of the Frau H¸tt.
Between them one looked straight across onto an almost
perpendicular amphitheatre of hill tops of a beautiful yellowish rock
which weathers a silvery grey, and below one some 200 feet a barren
morain [sic] of silvery stone and rock lying up against the peaks.
Beyond all one could see through the narrow opening long dark pine
covered valleys and blue ranges of hills. We climbed up to the foot of
the Frau H¸tt and round the other side of it where we saw the path
leading down to Steinach and were much tempted to pursue it. Papa
and I climbed some way up the Frau H¸tt rock but we came to a nasty
place round the rock and decided not to go on. We were
discouraged by having seen as we came up the unfortunate fate of a
young man called Hugo Ascher written up 3 times in full. We thought
we would not follow his example and verungl¸ck over the Frau H¸tt.
We sat on the top for half an hour in the sun and enjoyed ourselves
very much. We ran down pretty fast - it was delightful coming down
the grass slope trailing one's alpenstock. We had a delicious
refection of semels and chocolate at a little quelle and then came
straight on down the mountain getting in at 7. Found the big gentian on
the top of the saddle, but it was just over - also a lousewort which I had
not seen before, one of the arens[?], the heart leaved globularia, and
a lot of the ordinary tiny alpine things.
