Wed 21. [21 August 1895] Up at 4. Quite clear and starry.
Breakfasted on chocolate and off at 4.30. Delicious walk first over
stones and grass covered with pink androscae and gentians not yet
open, then over more and rougher stones between which grew
quantities of pink and white crowsfoot, then over glacier and then up a
little rocky bit to the top. [Next sentence added at bottom of page]
The sun fell on us here and made the mountain look pink under our
feet as it does far off. We were accompanied by 2 gems shooters the
first part of the way and when they left us we watched them putting on
climbing irons and going across a long stretch of hard snow. The
shooting on this side of the mountain belong to Alois. On the top we
found the German and his guide. We sat and eat chocolate and
pears and looked at the view which was superb. The morning was
quite cloudless. We saw the Stubei mountains, the ÷tzthal [Otztal], the
Dolomites, the Ortler group and up to the Bavarian mountains on the
north. We came down pretty quick - it was heavenly trailing one's
stock down the snow and very amusing coming down the rocks. The
gentians were all out in the sun. We reached the H¸tte at 9.15 and
found Hugo better. We partook of milk and conversed with the
friendly and Wirthin and Alois who was full of enthusiasm as to our
powers of walking. While we waited our little German came down with
his guide much exhausted. After persuading the Wirthin with some
difficulty to give us the bill - Ach so! she said as if it were the last thing
she expected - we left our agreeable H¸tte and proceeded on our
way to Fulpmes. We walked down the Pinnischer Thal - very steep
and beautiful. Elsa and I went on first, reached Fulpmes about 12.30
and ordered an excellent lunch of soup trout and cake. Hugo and
Papa arrived half an hour later, we lunched and walked to Patsch
where we caught the 4 train. I have walked down the Stubeier Thal
quite as often as I want to. Home at 5.30, bath, dinner and early to
bed.
