Wed 15. [15 August 1894] Walked into Bale [Basel (Basle)], Papa
and I, and saw the cathedral which is 14th century with some older
parts and very interesting. Lovely cloisters hanging over the Rhine
and a terrace, round the apse, which is charming and round arched.
On the west front are grotesque carvings, rather nice though and St
George on one little platform with a long spear sticking a minute
dragon on another jutting out stone. Charming north door, old I shd
say, of which I got a photograph. Left Bale at 10.50 - very hot. Dullish
journey to Z¸rich which we reached at 1.50. Hotel Baur, very nice.
After lunch we went by steamer to K¸ssnach [K¸snacht] where we
walked up a little hill between vineyards to a wood where we lounged
about. Found Soloman's Seal growing wild. Very hot. Got back to
Z¸rich 7.15. Walked about and saw the uncompromising outside of a
very grim cathedral! Molly dropped her parasol into the swans'
ponds! Dined out of doors and to bed early.
