Thurs 15. [15 February 1894] To the P Vecchio where we climbed to
the top of the tower and had a great view. Saw Savonarola's cell - "il
povero Savonarola" said our dear old custode. It certainly was small
and out of his slit of a window he could see such a slip of loveliness
with the Franciscan Santa Croce, his enemy, in the foreground.
Beautiful chapel frescoed by Ghirlandaio - altogether a very thrilling
place. To the flower market where we bought almond blossom and
anemones and irises and so home. After lunch to the Professor's
lecture and darker and sleepier than ever and I suffered (in silence)
tortures of indigestion! Then to S Marco again - it is a holy little place!
Fra Angelico is the one person who ever succeeded in giving bodily
form to the spiritual - witness the Transfiguration. Then to the de
Morgans who were agreeable.
