Thurs. Feb 1. [1 February 1894] Again to Santa Maria Novella - it's a
pity one can't see Cimabue's Madonna - the mother of all Madonna's
better. Then home and to our Professor's lecture where we
interviewed him and arranged lessons and heard some of his
discourse. Then to Villa Palmieri to lunch, with Lady Crawford and the
Majendies. Pleasant. Lovely place with a great view and agreeable
people. Sat in the garden on the grass with Lady Jinny Lindsay who
is a friend of Maggie Benson's and is very nice. This was the villa in
the Decameron and these the gardens where they told the stories.
The peasant people call Lady Crawford the Contessa Boccaccio.
