Sun. 28. [28 January 1894] Slept 10 hours! Out at 11 and first to the
glittering white Duomo so perfect in the sunshine. The sun shone on
Giotto's tower and on all the figures of the Baptistery gates and on the
locks of Benvenuto's Persius, casting a long golden shaft through the
Loggia, and on the Lungarno best of all. In the afternoon we went to S
Miniato sitting on the walls of the Campo Santo and under the faÁade
of the church with all Florence [Firenze] at our feet and the tower of the
Palazzo Vecchio like some wonderful fantastic stone banner above it.
These white and green marbles and this simple perfect building is a
marvellous revelation of beauty.
