Wed 26. [26 April 1893] Aunt L [Lizzie] drove us down early to see Sir L. Playfair's marbles in the English church. Very hideous, but interesting inscriptions telling the history of the place. They did carry on here in the ..... time, I must say! Amused to see the futher[?] Churchill last in the list of Consuls. I had a pleasant lunch with Clara and Willie; after wh the whole ....... family children and Miss S [Somers] and all drove to the top of the Arab town and walked down it. Very amusing. Narrow crooked streets, most of them a flight of stairs, here and there some arches and twisted pillars and a carved doorway; men and women sitting about smoking and talking. I think I should not care to live with Moorish architecture however. It's not simple enough with its crooked arches and crooked pillars and elaborate decoration. Bought some stuffs. Home in time to ride. Mr Pease came with us. It had rained a little and we had a charming ride through vinyard [sic] paths and hedges of aloes. The Wigrams dined - merry evening. Clara is a dear - but oh what a weary woman is Aunt L!
