Tues 25 [25 April 1893] Willie took the Peases and us into the Arab town. Saw the fish market where they sold horrible things, amongst others sea anemones, then to the great mosque, a grove of pillars and horseshoe arches built half round a court with a fig tree growing in it; then into a little judicial place outside where we stopped to see a petitioner come in and after kissing the turbans of all the officials sit down in the middle of the floor and begin a long recital of grievances; then to an old moorish house turned into a prÈfecture with lovely woodwork; then to the Museum where we saw the cast of St Jeronimo as he was found in the cement of the digne - very horrible, stretched out with his hands tied behind him and his lips pouted out; then to the Archbishop's palace where we saw some very beautiful plaster work. Lunched with Aunt L [Lizzie] at the Arkwrights where we were amused by his collection of Egyptian necklaces and by his exquisite garden where we sat eating nefs[?]. Pleasant people, he very deaf, she faded and attractive. Went to call on the Playfairs and home in time to dress for riding. Very dusty, but we went through some nice fields yellow with daisies. {Papa dined with the Wigrams. Aunt L retired directly} Lilian and I sat on the terrace and we all went up onto the roof after dinner. Papa dined with the Wigrams. Saw Lilians drawings and Miss Somers' - save the mark[?]!
