Sat. 9. [9 May 1914] Mrs C. [Cumberbatch]'s brother, Mr Rees, arrived
with his wife and little boy. Mr C. saw me off. My boat the Equateur,
singularly ruinous. Doors won't shut and windows won't open. Mr C.
introduced me to the Vali, Bekir Sami Pasha, a Circassian, going up
on leave to C'ple [Istanbul (Constantinople)]. Also to an Englishman
called Andrews, out here on business. Mr Gillan and Mr Sayer on
board, and a dull English woman Miss Harris. Very crowded. I have
a small dark cabin to myself.
