Sat. 18 [18 April 1914] And consequently tired today. Relentless
Hamad as flat as possible with 5 ft rises swimming over the mirage
miles away, descending as we approached and sitting down on the
Hamad. Lots of 'aishb. Cool west wind. We saw the ruined gate of
'Amej [Qasr 'Amij] to the right, after we had crossed the Sha'ib 'Amej
which is nothing of a valley but remarkable for its abundance of
daisies, 18 in high, regular hay. It loses itself in the ga'. Then we fell
into the Derb Zubaideh and shorly after sighted camels grazing.
'Adwan went for the news. They were Amarat and the shaikh was a
nephew of Fahd Beg. The latter has probably left Ga'rah. The
ghazzu of which we saw tracks yesterday were Shammar; they lifted
40 camels this morning. We camped near the road and a man came
to us who told us the Fahd Beg had been raiding the Wulud 'Ali. Ibn
Sha'lan has been raiding the Sba', but got nothing. He has now
returned to near Jof [Jawf, Al (Al Jauf)]. The Ruwalla have raided the
Shammar of Nejd [Najd] and taken large chesb. We tried to get this
man as a rafiq but he refused to come on our terms and 'Adwan has
gone off to see Jad'an, the nephew of Fahd. Not the Jad'an I saw 5
years ago in the Jezireh [Jazirah, Al]. He is dead. He was a cousin of
Fahd's I think. Slept for 1/2 an hour on my camel today. Rather
saddle sore and an ankle rubbed, bother it.
