Mon. 13. [13 April 1914] Off at 5.30, Mr Wills up not the Tods. When we got outside the town or rather in the suburbs across the river the poll[?] of the carriage broke and we had to fetch another. It was Hassun's carriage and we had the same driver as before and the little shaitan of a boy. While we waited F. [Fattuh] told me the story of 'Ali. He, angry at my refusing to take ibn 'ammhu with me - he wished to escape his military service - and at my refusing to pay for his ....... for going out with the camels which I had not ordered, refused to leave and called back the camels. F. going down in the afternoon found them. He called in Ali's uncle who remonstrated and produced Salih, Leachman's man. He asked £T15, and F. came to tell me and did not find me. F. went back made it up with Ali and paid the brother 3 or 4 mej. Thereat he thought they left, but they did not; they waited till dawn and left then taking the ibn 'amm with them whom 'Ali hoped to palm off on me as a stranger. The result was that then we got to Feluja [Fallujah, Al] at about 2 - we had waited an hour at the halfway khan where I lunched in my £T2 carriage - no camels and no 'Ali. They came in after 4. Ali in the devil's own temper and I dismissed him at once and told him he might walk back to Baghdad. I did not know then of the ibn 'amm. We picked up a Dulaimi, Zobah and rode out; 'Ali walked a little way and asked for wages. I said God was between him and me and I wd put the whole matter in the hands of M. al Bassam. We rode out 1/2 an hour - the camels tired having come the whole way from Baghdad, they are moulting horribly - and camped near Zobah's tents. 'Ali then appeared and I demanded a full apology which he refused. He got 11/2 mej. out of F. for his expenses back at which I was indignant. I wanted him to come to me for them. Hot still night. The stars came out, Sirius first, then the Bear, Leo's sicle [sic], Capella in haze, Aldebaran, Procyon above me. I went to bed on the hard ground and did not sleep. A 3/4 moon rose in the middle of the night and looked me in the eye. It was deformed and huge and red on the horizon. Dogs barked and prowled round.
