Tues March 10 [10 March 1914] I gave up the idea of Dubaib having come to the conclusion that the stones were fossils! We were off early, just after sunrise and watered at a khabra. We put the Gulban of Taiyim a little to the right. Flocks of black sheep and Shammari shepherds. On the farther side of the level bottom in which are the gulban we entered the Nefud [Nafud, An] and travelled along a well marked khall which we only left once when we missed our way. The Nefud a garden of flowering weeds, often white with daisies. Nothing else but 'irta (not yet green) and 'adir. Where we camped there was a little dry subat and hammat. Towards midday the gu'urah became rather large and in the afternoon there were a few tu's. 'Ali was 18 years with the post, taking jobs with merchants when they presented themselves. At first the postman was paid 28 mej a month but as the road became more known the pay lessened. For caravans from Baghdad to Dam.[Dimashq (Damascus, Esh Sham, Damas)] he would get from £10 to £20, varying with the size of the caravan. Every tent paying so much. Twaiyyeh [Atwa, Al] ('Atwa on the map) is now they say to the S.E. of us and Hamatiyyeh to the NE. The Shammar call Sirius al Sha'ri, the name I have heard before; but the Harb call him al Mirzim. Al Miyazin is the t.... name for Orion: the Arabs call him al Jozeh. Mashkhur knew also Shail [dots below S and h] or Shail [dot below h] - Canopus or Jupiter? and Aldebaran as [space left blank].
