Sun Jan 18. [18 January 1914] Wonderful clear morning and temp 42. Off at 6.15. Talib was very anxious that I should tasherrif wahalna but I promised to come on my return and he rode off after about an hour. We crossed the Bawaliyyat and came down onto the tributaries of the Atatat and followed the wadi almost down to Tubah. Small marigolds flowering. The ruin stands just a little N. of the junction. Sun hot at noon and temp 62 at 3 PM. Sayyah says that in the summer the Sukhur have from 3 to 400 baits at Bir Ba'ir. The rest go to the W. Sirhan [Sirhan, Wadi] and to Teben, W. of Zizia. He asked me whether we called this desert Syria, and when I said no, Arabia, he said they called it Syria, it was all under Damascus [Dimashq (Esh Sham, Damas)] and they came under the govt. in the summer and autumn when they came W and N for water and pasturage - timsikuna. But in winter and spring out in the desert they were free. Fa'iz has about 500 tents, Hathmel 300, Hadithah 200, there is also Khraisah, the Hagaish 200. Early in the morning we passed a good many of the Jebbar, rahalin, with camels, but their chief wealth is in sheep. The camels were wandering all over the Atatir. Flint covered earth, glistening in the sun. The trees chiefly firs which the camels don't like much. Good clear water in the ghadir, a little lower down. Salim ill - temp of 103.5. We got to Tubah at about 1 and I photographed till 3. The work over the doors is quite as fine as Meshatta [Qasr el Mushatta], but the building is hasty unskilful desert work. No doubt Umayyad. Close with light cloud and wonderful sunset. A few graves outside with the Sukhur dabbus [sketch of symbol]. Curious rounded lumps of sandstone cropping up among the flints. Delicious camp, but the men rather anxious about ghazzus. The desert behind us is fadiyyeh and Tubah is the gate of 'Anazeh raiders. The foes of Sukhur are the Fed'an, the Sba' and all the Jebehiyyeh except the 'Isa and the Serdiyyeh.
