Fri. Dec. 19. [19 December 1913] Woke several times on account of
the cold. Ther. fell to 28. Ground all frosted and a thick mist. Broke up
camp in under 11/2 hours. Mist very tiresome; did not allow me to
take long bearings. It lifted a little about 8 and showed us the J. al
Sharqi [Sharqi, Jebel esh (Anti-Lebanon)]; then closed round us till 11.
We rode all day through flats strewn with volcanic stones and set with
tells; well to the E. of Oppenheim's tells. We passed under T. Milhah
Qurunfil, leaving it close to the left, half in mist. Passed a Weli on a hill
about 8 and about 12 a couple of walls at right angles, raised ["razed"
written above in pencil] to the ground, with a heap of stones behind,
like a bustan and a naturah said M al M [Muhammad al Ma'rawi]. I
didn't think they were old. All the stones here black when newly
broken, weathering white. Lots of Shih. We saw no soul all day and
came into camp at 2.15 in line with J. al Makhul. Delicious warm
afternoon. We fetched water from a pool not far off, camping here on
account of the shih. Lots of paths worn through all this desolate land;
but the big tribes have gone to the Hamad [Hamad, Al]. Note Ya
Fullan. Allah? Wallah! Teslan[?] Tekrami. Tawakkil Allah.
