Sun May 14 [14 May 1911] Rode down to Tell Halaf, a splendid site
on the Jirjib which washes it. Then Mr Andrus and I were entertained
by Arslan Agha, Hassan Agha's son in law. Then we walked round
the whole site, saw the 2 great pools which are the source of the
Khabur and a big sulphur spring. At least 2 towns here besides one
under Kefes and the Hittite site. The Circassians at first settled
below[?] the upper pool; now they have built their village 1/2 hr further
N. above the pool. Wrote and read till tea when I walked with Mr
Andrus round the ruins N of our camp, probably a Byz. town. At 7.10
AM Temp 64 Bar 28.6.
